A farm holiday or agriturismo is a type of tourism whereby you find accommodation on a farm. This type of holiday came into existence at the end of the sixties and has become more and more popular in Italy since the eighties.
Initially it was meant for those people who lived in cities and were willing to have a different life experience and participate in working on a farm. With time the hard labour aspect has gradually disappeared. Agriturismo is the forerunner of rural tourism.
Nowadays it provides a growing number of services besides mere accommodation: catering, courses, educational farm holidays for schools, tasting of local products etc.
This type of tourism has created new opportunities for development in areas where agriculture was languishing, thus safeguarding these areas and also providing work for younger generations.
B&B, short for Bed and Breakfast, is an English expression for a type of informal accommodation. One stays with a family that has one or more guest rooms available, with or without private bathroom and with breakfast included.
B&Bs are generally less expensive than hotels and motels but more expensive than hostels and campsites. B&Bs provide a source of income for the families who own them and are an opportunity to those who are living alone or elderly to get to know different types of people.
Holiday homes are second homes that are rented out by their owners, especially during summer (which also covers maintenance and tax expenses).
Unlike an agriturismo or B&B, they are a self-catering accommodation where you have the whole house or apartment at your disposal, receiving the house keys upon arrival. Besides normal furnishings and kitchen equipment, you are likely to find an iron, a washing machine etc. and sometimes even an internet connection!
